In its programme the quarterly "EIKON - Internationale Zeitschrift für Photographie und Medienkunst" focuses on Austrian and international media arts with special emphasis on fine art photography and its significance in the New Media, i.e. in the intermedial context. The periodical is issued both in magazine and book form and is subdivided into a presentation part and an informative part.

The presentation part comprises the artistic as well as theoretical contributions. Our main concern is to present young media artists and international media art. None of the subjects receive preferential treatment, i.e. there is no medial priority (photography and New Media are on an equal standing). In future, however, EIKON will focus even more on media arts. An essential aspect of the presentation part is formed by the reflections on photography and New Media or media arts within the theoretical context of arts, media, and human sciences. We thus do not only introduce and report on international work, which is something very important and extremely necessary, but we also accord media science and its positions the attention it merits. It goes without saying, that aside from intermedial reflections, the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues are given the stage in this publication platform, too. Priority will be given to topical art and media (theoretical) debates. The EIKON-team is naturally not only intent on reporting on international art, but also on intensifying the international promotion of Austrian works of art.

Theme-issues support this program; the following have been published:
  • Multimedialität, Intermedialität, Transmedialität (Multi-Mediality, Inter-Mediality, Trans-Mediality, 4, 1992),
  • Photographie und Kinematographie (Photography and Kinematography, 7/8, 1993),
  • Photo-Media (9, 1994),
  • Frankreich - Österreich (France - Austria, 10/11, 1994),
  • Darstellung des Unvorstellbaren. Möglichkeiten und Grenzen künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung mit Shoah, Nationalsozialismus und Zweitem Weltkrieg in der zeitgenössischen Photographie (Shoah and Second World War in contemporary art-photography, 14/15, 1995),
  • Collected Photography. Öffentliche und private europäische Photokunstsammlungen (Collected Photography. Public and private European photo-collections, 18-20, 1996),
  • Photographie : adäquat (Photography : adequate, 21/22, 1997).
The informative part of EIKON is subdivided into different themes. Various institutions and (artistic) groups are introduced in regular series and in future they will be able to introduce themselves. Furthermore, there will be the usual comprehensive review part which will increasingly include new international publications. Emphasis will continue to be put on critique of exhibitions. So as to guarantee a diversity of opinion, we aim at increasing the bilateral or multilateral dialogue in the coming issues. This is to be a constructive contribution to a critique culture in this country which, as we all know, is distinguished by its absence, mistaking slander for critique. The informative part is completed by a comprehensive exhibition calendar, information on the various events, and bibliographical information.
