Camera Austria International magazine is dedicated to the artistic and theoretical exploration of photography in the context of contemporary art, new media and social developments. Special attention is given to current approaches that focus on the dispositifs of photography and new image media, their modes of operation and patterns of reception against the background of overall cultural conditions.

The publication of the magazine was not only accompanied by an ongoing international exhibition programme and the annual Symposia on Photography, but also marked the start of another project in 1980 focusing on current photography: within the European context of a new discussion of the media concept at the end of the seventies, and within the international framework of a number of initiatives coming from the photo artists themselves, the magazine quickly gained itself a position with the aim of offering a forum for artistic and theoretical work with/on photography. Since then, the magazine has become established as an important medium for a current debate on artistic photography not only in the German-speaking world. Artists from Europe, the USA and Asia - recently also from the Arab world - have published important contributions in Camera Austria International. Photo historians and theorists, writers and philosophers contribute to the theoretical part of the publication. All contributions are elaborated in close cooperation with the authors and artists.

In addition to monographs and theoretical contributions, Camera Austria International includes an extensive editorial section featuring an overview and critique of major exhibitions and new book publications along with interviews with artists in connection with current exhibitions and projects; furthermore, the Forum section allows young artists to present their works to a large public for the first time, while the News section provides details on international competitions, awards, festivals, workshops and other events.

Camera Austria International is published quarterly in two languages (German / English) and features a wealth of colour illustrations. Every issue totals 96 - 120 pages, accompanied (at irregular intervals) by artists' editions featured in the magazine. You can order Camera Austria International as a subscription straight from the editorial office and it is also available in specialised book stores.

Camera Austria is financed by its members and subscribers and is supported by funds provided by the City of Graz, BKA Vienna and Styria Province.
